Brugges and Zeeland bike tour
58
For many years I've been travelling for work to Zeebrugge which is the ancient port of Brugge. As I learnt about Zeebrugge I discovered that Brugges was a time capsule as is Ghent due to the respective cities being very wealthy under the Spanish but declining after their rivers silted up. Hence these cities have stopped being strategic and all new build more-or-less stopped.
I live in the North of England and this year I planned to take a Hull ferry to Zeebrugge and then to ride a bike to Rotterdam where I could catch a ferry back to Hull. This would mean that I could get to visit Brugge, Brielle (another ancient city stuck in a time warp) and Zierikzee which also has some old city left.
Well it worked like a dream, straight from work I was able to catch the Hull ferry. Next morning , after a massive breakfast, leaving the ferry early in the day I peddled down bike safe paths to Brugge where I spent the afternoon visiting the scenes of the |”In Bruges” film.
Next day I cycled (using a ferry) to Veere (another town stuck in the past but due to flooding this time). After a good nights sleep I whizzed through Zierikzee and after a night in a small village B&B I was able to enjoy an afternoon in Brielle before catching the ferry out of Rotterdam.
Good food, flat country and a strong wind on the back made the ride very enjoyable.

Very cool. I didn't make it to Brugges when I was in Belgium, but it is such a beautiful country. A bike trip would be great there.
